Shetland 1 is the next step in the early progression of our young ball players. In this phase, children get the opportunity to see live pitching from a coach pitcher. This added dynamic presents more of a challenge as advanced hand/eye coordination is required to be successful.
McCandless utilizes the practice/game model in order to better enhance the playing experience for our youngest ball players. Sessions usually take place one night a week and Saturday mornings. Each session begins with a 30-45 minute practice in order to review previously learned skills or introduce new concepts. Our knowledgeable and caring coaches take the time to make these practices fun and engaging. The use of station work keeps our little ones moving and on task!
Each session will end with a 1-3 inning game where our young ball players get a chance to show off their skills! Coaches (and parents) are in the field in order to help put children into positions and coach in the field. Offensively, each child hits each inning. During an at bat, a child will see 5 to 8 pitches to hit. If he/she cannot hit the coach pitched balls successfully, a tee will be used in order to guarantee success.
This division is designed to introduce the game of baseball/softball to some of our youngest members of the community. It is also intended to plant a seed of love for the game that makes our kids want to come back week after week. Because of this, there are no outs or score kept during contests.
